Search History

How can I view my Search History?

PubMed will keep track of the searches you run in a given search session.

Click on the Advanced Search link underneath the Basic Search Box to see your Search History.

How can I use my Search History line numbers to create a new search?

If you would like to combine two lines of your search history, you can use the assigned line numbers instead of retyping all the terms.

Below is an example.  This is the same as running the search: (physical therapy OR occupational therapy) AND (telemedicine OR telehealth)

Screenshot from PubMed showing two lines of search history (#1: physical therapy OR occupational therapy, #2: telemedicine OR telehealth). The combined search #1 AND #2 is written into the Query Box.

Search Details

How can I see the Search Details of a particular search?

To view your Search Details in your Search History:

  • Click on the Advanced Search link underneath the search box
  • Scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Search page to view your Search History
  • Find the line of your Search History that you would like to look at
  • Click on the arrow icon underneath the heading Search Details to expand out the details section
  • This will then display the search you entered, the full search that was actually run by the database, and all of the individual term translations that took place

Why does the database interpret my search in this way?

PubMed typically applies a process called Automatic Term Mapping (ATM) when you run a search.

Check out our page on Automatic Term Mapping for more details.
