Information on the reserve collection available at the Health Sciences Library

About Print Reserves

Health Sciences Library print reserve collection, located at the Public Services Desk on the 1st floor of Prior Hall, consists of physical materials (books, DVDs, kits, etc) that are available for 2 hours, 1 day, 1 week, or 3 week checkout periods. Course materials may be included in this collection at the request of instructors. Materials included in the collection are sourced from: 

  • OSU's Library Collection (excluding items in special collections)
  • Owned by the instructor or department-owned by the instructor's department.

 

Borrowing Print Reserves

The following is in place for print reserves:

  • All print reserve items may be checkout at the front desk located on the 1st floor of Prior Hall with your BuckID or Medical Center Badge.
  • Print reserves check out for shorter periods and can vary from item to item. Loan periods are as follows
    • 2 hours
    • 1 day
    • 1 week
    • 3 weeks
  • Items are available on a first come, first served basis. Hold requests and loan renewals are NOT permitted.
  • Library visitors may check out TWO print reserve items at a time and use outside of the library is permitted.
  • Returns must be made at the Public Services Desk at HSL.

Fines and fees for Print Reserves

Late fines and fees for Health Sciences Library reserves:

  • $5.00 for each hour/day overdue (maximum overdue)

How to find Print Reserves in the library catalog

You can locate Health Sciences Library print reserve material in the library catalog in two ways:

  • Search by normal methods (i.e. title, ISBN, author, etc) in the general library catalog.  
    • When you search by this method, you are searching the whole library catalog for individual items. Material in the Health Sciences Library print reserve collection will have the location  "Health Sciences Reserves". 

  • Search for reserves by Course or Prof/TA
    • When you search by this method, you are searching for items exclusively cataloged as reserve items. 
    • You can search by:
      • Course name
      • Professor/instructor name
      • Or for all Health Sciences Library print reserve items search "HSL" under course name.

How to add course materials to Print Reserves

Instructors may add materials for their courses to Health Sciences Library print reserve collection. Materials added to the print reserve collection are sourced from the OSU library collection and/or personal copies of professors/instructors/departments*. To add materials please do the following: 

  1. Review HSL's course reserve policy for detailed information on how to add materials, process to add items, etc. Policy linked below.
  2. Place request on our reserve request form. Form linked below. 
  3. Library staff will be in contact with the instructor upon receipt of request form usually in 24-48 hours M-F, business hours to finalize any details. 
  4. Library staff will contact the instructor when materials have been processed and added to the reserve collection and is ready for student borrowing.

How to find eBook copies of Print Reserves

Some of the print reserves have eBook copies available through the library. eBooks copies are NOT listed with print reserves, but the links below will help you locate eBook copies, if available, through OSU libraries. If using eBooks or other online resources off-campus, please use the link below for "off-campus sign in" to authenticate yourself as an OSU user to get full access to online library resources. 

Finding Electronic Books in Publisher Collections and Databases

Core25 Books

Provides quick and easy access to 25 popular eBooks covering most internal medicine topics as well as medical dictionaries and drug information. 

Clinical Key

Contains content from several current Elsevier databases including MD Consult, First Consult, Procedures Consult, Clinics of North America and new content including over 900 eBooks.

AccessMedicine

Access to more than 60 medical titles including Harrison's Online, frequently updated content, thousands of images and illustrations, interactive self-assessment, case files, diagnostic tools, and more.

STAT!Ref

Provides access to electronic versions of AHFS Drug Information, Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, and more.

OhioLINK Electronic Book Center

The OhioLINK Electronic Book Center includes over 45,000 scholarly and reference eBooks on a variety of topics including nearly 3,000 in the health sciences.

Safari: O'Reilly's Online Learning Platform for Higher Education

Provides access to thousands of books, videos, expert-curated courses, and interactive learning environments for business, technology, and more.

HathiTrust Digital Library (Emergency Temporary Access)

Books available through HathiTrust which are also in The Ohio State University Libraries print collections have been made available online without the additional step of requesting a digital scan. This action from HathiTrust allows digital access to nearly two million volumes, corresponding to approximately 46% of the print collections held at Ohio State.
